4 Questions to Find the Right
Custom Silicone Cord
No materials science degree required. Work through Pandasoft's four questions to lock in material, structure, hardness, and dimensions -- find the right silicone cord in under three minutes.
Specification selection is simpler than it looks. Answer the four questions below and you'll map your requirements directly to a complete set of concrete specifications.
Solid or Sponge?
Solid vs Sponge -- the first fork in the road
This is the first decision point. It directly determines the sealing mechanism and feel of the cord.
Solid Cord
Dense structure with strong compression resistance, tear resistance, and wear resistance. Ideal for seals under mechanical stress, O-ring fabrication, vibration damping, and general cable/wire protection.
Sponge Cord
Closed-cell interior -- soft, compressible, and lightweight. Seals by closing gaps under low closure force. Best for irregular gap filling, door and cover sealing, thermal insulation, and vibration isolation. Typical hardness: 20-30 Shore A.
What Media or Environment Will the Cord Contact?
Determines the correct material grade
Matching the grade to the contact media and operating conditions is the key to preventing swelling and premature aging.
Standard Silicone (VMQ)
High-temperature, weathering, ozone, and UV resistance. Covers the vast majority of general sealing and outdoor applications.
Fluorosilicone (FVMQ)
All VMQ benefits plus resistance to oils, fuels, and solvents. For automotive, aerospace, and fuel-contact environments.
Food-Grade FDA Silicone
Compliant with FDA 21 CFR 177.2600. Non-toxic and odorless for direct food and beverage contact.
Metal Detectable Silicone
Fragments detectable by metal detectors. Engineered specifically for food processing lines to prevent foreign body contamination.
How Soft or Hard Do You Need It?
Shore A Hardness -- compression fit vs. durability
Hardness governs how well the cord compresses to form a seal and how long it holds up under load. Most silicone cords fall in the Shore A 30-70 range.
Soft
30-40 Shore AEasy to compress with excellent surface conformance. Best for low closure-force sealing and large cross-section O-rings.
Medium
50-60 Shore ABalanced softness and resilience. The most versatile hardness for general sealing and O-ring cord stock -- 60 Shore A is the standard O-ring wire hardness.
Hard
70-80 Shore AResists deformation, wear, and mechanical stress. Suitable for high-pressure sealing or as a lightweight plastic part replacement.
O-Ring / Precision Seal -- or General Routing?
End use determines diameter tolerance and processing
The intended application determines your requirements for diameter precision and downstream processing.
O-Ring / Precision Seal Fabrication
Requires tight diameter tolerances and a smooth surface finish. Cord is vulcanized end-to-end to form custom-diameter O-rings. A structurally sound joint is essential for long-term sealing integrity.
General Routing / Gap Filling
Wider diameter tolerance is acceptable. Supplied by the meter in coils or cut to fixed lengths. No precision joining required.

Why Silicone Cord Unit Price Is About
Far More Than Diameter
Same diameter, wildly different price. Pandasoft evaluates every quote against your complete project requirements -- so you can compare cost and quality on a level playing field. Here are the six real drivers behind silicone cord pricing.
Biggest Cost Driver
Material Grade
Standard industrial VMQ is the most economical. Food-grade (FDA), medical-grade (USP Class VI), fluorosilicone (FVMQ), flame-retardant, and metal-detectable silicone are specialty formulations -- more expensive raw materials, stricter production requirements.
Medical-grade silicone requires biocompatibility testing; fluorosilicone carries a premium for its fuel and oil resistance. Specifying the wrong grade either inflates cost unnecessarily or risks failing compliance audits.
Hidden Cost Driver
Hardness & Tolerance
Shore A hardness affects the compound formulation. But tolerance requirements are the real hidden cost lever. Silicone has a natural shrinkage rate of ~2-4%, and the softer the compound, the harder it is to control dimensions.
Tight tolerances on soft cord demand precision tooling and tighter process control. Over-specifying tolerances where they aren't needed adds unnecessary cost. For sealing O-rings and dimension-sensitive applications, tight tolerances are non-negotiable.
Geometry Matters
Diameter & Profile
Diameter affects material volume, but profile shape has an equally significant impact. Solid round cord is the most standard and economical. Square, custom-profile, hollow, and sponge/foam sections require dedicated extrusion dies and more complex process control.
Larger diameters use more material and cost more per meter -- but you can't cross-compare prices across different profiles. A hollow D-profile and a solid round cord of the same diameter have completely different price baselines.
Compliance Cost
Certification Requirements
When FDA, USP Class VI, 3-A, NSF-51, UL, EN45545-2 flame-retardant, or military spec (A-A59588 / AMS) certifications are required, costs rise measurably. These certifications demand stricter raw materials, testing, documentation, and batch traceability.
When comparing quotes, always verify whether the competing supplier's price includes equivalent certification coverage. Comparing a "bare" price against a "certified" price is an apples-to-oranges comparison that can create serious downstream compliance risk.
Value-Added Processing
Fabrication & Delivery Form
Is the cord supplied on reels by the meter, cut to fixed lengths, or vulcanized into spliced O-rings or frame seals? Each step up in fabrication adds processing cost. Extruded cord sold by the meter is the baseline.
Spliced seamless O-rings require additional vulcanized joint processing, and joint quality directly affects sealing reliability -- this is a genuine value-add beyond raw extrusion. Fixed-length cutting also adds labor and waste management costs. Specify only what your application requires.
Economies of Scale
Order Volume & Tooling
Non-standard and custom profiles typically require a dedicated extrusion die -- a one-time tooling investment. The larger the order volume, the more that tooling and setup cost is amortized across units, driving the per-meter price down.
Small prototype runs carry a higher unit price; large production runs reduce it significantly. Quoting a unit price without knowing the order volume is meaningless. Pandasoft's quotes factor in tooling, order quantity, and long-term partnership potential to give you an accurate total cost picture.

Pandasoft's Approach
Comparing per-meter price alone is how projects go wrong.
A lower headline price can mask a lower material grade, wider tolerances, or missing certifications -- all of which create real risk downstream. Pandasoft starts by understanding your complete project requirements: application, media compatibility, certifications, tolerances, volume, and delivery form. Then we give you a comprehensive quote so you can compare cost and quality on the same baseline -- and buy with confidence.
Silicone Cord Options Matched
to Your Application
Different applications require different material, size, color, and packaging choices. Pandasoft helps buyers define the right specification before production.
Dimension 1
Shape / Profile
The most common customization dimension. Beyond standard round profiles, options include square, rectangular, trapezoidal, O-ring, D-shaped, grooved, and fully custom cross-sections produced with dedicated extrusion dies per drawing.
Dimension 2

Hollow: Easier compression, reduced material weight.
Co-extruded: Different materials or hardness zones within a single cord profile.
With Insert: Metal or fiber core embedded for enhanced tensile strength and rigidity.
Dimension 3
Size & Tolerance
Diameter typically ranges from approx. 1 mm to 40 mm; larger sizes available on request. Metric and imperial units both supported.
